Speech impairments can be the result of problems with the brain, nerves or muscles that control the face, larynx, and vocal cords making it difficult to say certain sounds or to speak at all By the first grade, roughly 5 percent of children have noticeable speech disorders

Speech Impairment

FACTS There are many kinds of speech and language disorders that can affect children. Below are the four major areas in which these impairments occur. • Articulation : speech impairments where the child produces sounds incorrectly (e.g., lisp, difficulty articulating certain sounds, such as “L” or “R”); • Fluency : speech impairments where a child’s flow of speech is disrupted by sounds, syllables, and words that are repeated (such as a stutter), prolonged, or avoided and where there may be silent blocks or inappropriate inhalation, exhalation, or phonation patterns; • Voice : speech impairments where the child’s voice has an abnormal quality to its pitch, resonance, or loudness; and • Language : language impairments where the child has problems expressing needs, ideas, or information, and/or in understanding what others say. These areas are reflected in how “speech or language impairment” is defined by the nation’s special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Famous persons

Dyslexia is a term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols 10-15% of the population has dyslexia People with dyslexia learn techniques to function in our print world

Dyslexia

Facts

Dyslexia is a term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters and other symbols, but does NOT affect general intelligence

About 10-15% of the population are identified with dyslexia, equally boys and girls

Dyslexia makes it hard to read and spell but children with dyslexia often have strong listening vocabularies.

There is no evidence that people with dyslexia see letters backwards.

Children with dyslexia learn to decode unknown words rather than associating sounds and letters, and they may have trouble rhyming.

Kids with dyslexia might get frustrated and might be reluctant to read or write.

People do not outgrow dyslexia but with help they can often learn to read and write and are successful in many different careers..

When the eye does not see objects as clearly as usual More than 10 million Americans are visually impaired Vision impairment creates challenges to learning as well as personal care, money, and daily routines

Vision Impairment

FACTS What causes Visual Impairment? Eye disorders that can lead to visual impairments can include: retinal degeneration, albinism, cataracts, glaucoma, muscular problems that result in visual disturbances, corneal disorders, diabetic retinopathy, congenital disorders and infection

Famous persons Stevie Wonder – was born blind and despite this has become one of the most talented singer – songwriters ever to live. As a child Stevie Wonder taught himself to play several instruments. Helen Keller – is well known as an incredibly successful blind and deaf woman. She was not born blind. She developed an illness when she was nineteen months old that left her deaf and blind. Helen Keller later became a world famous author and speaker. Andrea Bocelli – is one of the world’s most famous opera singers, and he became totally blind at age twelve. He worked for years as a lawyer and practiced his “hobby” of singing in piano bars and at parties on weekends. He is quoted as saying “you have to persevere, you have to insist.” Maria Runyan – was an Olympic runner. She never let her disability slow her down. She had a degenerative eye condition that leads her to become legally blind. She has a master’s degree in Special Education. Maria is a motivational speaker, encouraging people to look past barriers and reach their full potential. Aaron Golub – is a seventeen-year-old legally blind high school football player. His coach says he is a great athlete. He is on his way to play football at Tulane University. There is nothing you can’t accomplish if you really want to do it, Golub said. Joseph Pulitzer – is the namesake for one of the most desired honors, the Pulitzer Prize for literature, music and journalism. Pulitzer’s eyes began to fail him leading to becoming completely blind.

What are the different types of Visual Impairment? There are three degrees of vision loss:

1. Visual acuity of 20/200 – the legally blind person can see at 20 feet what the average sighted person can see at 200.

2. Low vision – limited or diminished vision that cannot be corrected with standard lenses.

3. Partial sight – the field of vision is impaired because of an illness, a degenerative syndrome, or trauma.

EXPERIENCE Person: Habitat Conservation Agent Cataract Simulator Goggles: Sometimes there can be opacities in some of the structures of the eye, which may cause distortions, and blurry vision that cannot be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. The lens of the eye may have opacities, which are commonly known as cataracts. Wear the goggles and attempt to find the hidden pictures.

Autism is a disorder that affects social interaction, language, and communication skills Autism now affects 1 in 66 children and 1 in 42 boys It ranges in severity from mildly impacting an otherwise normal life to a devastating disability

Autism

Facts

What is Autism? Autism is considered a new developmental disorder, as it did not clinically exist until 1944 and is now the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S.

Autism now affects 1 in 66 children and 1 in 42 boys

Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism

Famous persons Dan Aykroyd According to a 2007 article in The Guardian, as a child, actor Dan Aykroyd was expelled from two schools for acting up and a psychiatrist had diagnosed him with a mild Asperger’s syndrome. He also had a few tics and had shown signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Temple Gradin “The thing about being autistic is that you gradually get less and less autistic, because you keep learning, you keep learning how to behave. It’s like being in a play; I’m always in a play.” - Temple Grandin

There is no medical detection or cure for autism

What causes Autism? Scientists aren’t certain about what causes Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but it’s likely that both genetics and environment play a role. Researchers have identified a number of genes associated with the disorder. Studies of people with ASD have found irregularities in several regions of the brain.

Courtney Love In a biography by Poppy Z, we learn that Courtney was diagnosed by one of her therapists as mildly autistic.

Lewis Carroll Did Lewis Carroll have Asperger’s syndrome? Historians aren’t exactly sure. Professor Michael Fitzgerald, of Dublin’s Trinity College compared the behavior of his patients with Asperger’s syndrome with that described in the biographies of several famous men and determined that they would have been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Lewis was on his list.

James Durbin was a hero to many when he competed on Season 10 of American Idol and was open about his Tourette’s and Asperger’s syndromes.

Each person on your team will have a role to simulate SOME of the experiences that can occur with Austism -- remember it is a spectrum of experiences and each person's experience is unique. Read, then follow, your instructions until the time runs out.
